It ended up being a rough week at LIST as I came down with some sort of strange virus and I had to close LIST down for a day and a half. Luckily, and I am on the mend and hope to be fully recovered soon – we will be open tomorrow!
Some good news from the work I was able to do though, is that one of our students seems to be on the verge of learning to read. He and his brother have a learning disability; his brother came to me when he was in second grade, up until that point, he had not been able to learn to read. With lots of work with his parents and myself, we were able to teach him to read, and now, two years later, he is reading fluently! His brother, who is now in second grade as well, is showing signs of being able to start the process as well. He is now identifying a lot more words on his own and while blending or sound words out is still difficult, when we blend them together, he is able to blend the word. I am excited to start the process with him.
We are also excited because we are having our very first LIST Halloween Party! Three of our volunteers are involved in a Bible Study outside of LIST and their group wants to do a service project, so they are volunteering their time to put on a Halloween Party for our students! It will be held on Halloween from 3-5 at LIST. We are planning some great Halloween science experiments as well as great Halloween crafts. I think it will be a great time for everyone!
Finally, don’t forget about Masquerade Networking with a Purpose on October 28 at Kay ‘n Dave’s in Culver City – It starts at 6:30, but feel free to drop by at any time that night!
