A Bit More Reality

Once again this week, I have been reminded of some of the challenges the students of LIST face, and the students in our community. Two students attending LIST, who happen to be in the same class were telling me about a student in their class. The teacher was questioning where his homework was when he broke down crying. When asked what was wrong, he said that his father had been shot the night before and that was why he had not completed his homework. I do not know the extent of the injuries, or why this parent was shot, if it was gang related, or if it was random, but I do know that this news had a great affect on the two students I was speaking with. While it was not their dad that had been shot, they were very concerned about this man’s wellbeing, and while it was not mentioned, I could tell that it also put fear in them concerning their own safety. I hope that they will have good news for me when I see them next week.
In other news, do not forget to mark your calendars for October 28, 2010 – Kay’ n Dave’s for our Masquerade Social Networking with a Purpose. It will be a great chance to meet new people and hear about the work LIST is doing. You can also purchase your LIST 2011 calendars at this event!
Also coming soon is the addition of a Saturday art class. One of our volunteers has a new job which will not allow her to volunteer in the evenings, but she does not want to end her relationship with LIST and wants to continue to work with us, so she is working on developing art classes for our students. They will probably start in January, and they will be held once a month. More details will follow, but I am very excited about this possibility!
