We’re back! That’s right, after a summer vacation, LIST has now opened for our summer session. We started the week with seven students enrolled and ended the week having doubled our enrollment with 14 students enrolled! During the summer, I had sent postcards to those students that had been attending last year and to those that were on the waiting list to remind them of their scheduled times, or to advertise our summer program. Most, if not all of the seven new students enrolled came because of these postcards. At the end of our school year session in June, I had two spots left for our 2010-2011 program, within an hour of opening on Monday, those spots were taken and we had to start a new waiting list for the school year!
For our summer program, we are taking advantage of the summer break and no homework to do one science experiment a week along with reading and math skills review. This week’s experiment was called “Geyzer Time” and it involved using Diet Coke, Mentos and a specially designed tube to create a geyser (many of you may have seen this done on YouTube or elsewhere). Most of our students had not been exposed to this activity, so they were truly amazed. Some of the students were stunned into silence with their mouths gaping, others were so excited they started jumping up and down! Many of them exclaimed, “Wow, Cool or Awesome!” To be honest though, I’m not sure who had more fun, the kids or myself!
We also have some exciting plans in the works for the fall. Paulette Fontanez Photography and Events along with Eskapade Productions is graciously donating their time, resources and talents to our benefit with two different projects. The first is a school year calendar with pictures of some of the students, parents and volunteers of LIST. This will be available for purchase sometime in September and a portion of the proceeds will benefit LIST. The second project is the event, “Masquerade Social Networking with a Purpose” to be held on October 28. LIST will be the highlighted “purpose” and we will have the opportunity to present our mission to a greater audience. I will post more information about each project in the near future.
In the meantime, stay tuned for next week’s Experiment of the Week!
