Quote of the week: "I love coming to your school Mrs. Vellenga!" This quote was given by a first grade student. This is the boy that came to us with a blank stare and very few reading skills. Now, he is engaged, excited, studying at home, making progress, and enjoying his time at LIST!
With all of the volunteers that have been consistently serving LIST this year, we are breaking our attendance record from last year! As of today, we have completed over 750 tutoring sessions! Currently, over 20 students are attending LIST throughout the week and our waiting list has over 30 students; the student on the top of the list has been waiting since the beginning of November. Even our current students would like to extend their time with us, either coming more then twice a week, or staying longer then their 45 minutes sessions. Unfortunately, in order to increase our capacity, we need to keep these parameters set up, otherwise, we would love to have our students come every day, and stay for as long as they would like.
In other news, we had a new volunteer join us recently, a high school student who found us on the Disney volunteer program website. We are excited because she has chosen to do her community service required by her high with LIST, so that means she will be volunteering with us for the next several weeks. Hopefully, we can find more high school students who need to complete their community service hours!
Finally, we sent out the invites to our Delicious Desserts event which will be held on April 10, 2010. The cost for tickets is $10/person, and tickets can be bought at the door. We will be sampling a variety of desserts, and we will also share the work LIST is doing and give you an opportunity to join us in our work. For more information, go to http://www.listhelps.org/.
