Progress and a Big Thanks!

Shortly before Christmas break, I had the opportunity to work with a student that had been coming to LIST for a few weeks previously (although his attendance had been spotty). Having the opportunity to work with him (as opposed to one of our volunteers), I quickly realized that this student (a first grade boy, repeating first grade for the second time this year) is extremely low academically. I switched his time to come with the second grade twin boys I am working with so that I would have a small “class” every Tuesday and Thursday. I also told the mom of various activities she could do with him to help his learning process.

Since we have been back these past two weeks, his attendance has been spotty once again (although I am hopeful this is more of a communication issue), but I was extremely pleased to note that he is making progress and that this progress is came because his family is worked with him over the break! I was especially careful to praise him A LOT on Thursday; I gave him several sticker rewards, and the opportunity to take something from our treasure box. The delight on his face was incredible! In the past when he has come, his face has been one of a blank stare, but not on Thursday. It was really great to see! I also thanked the mom for working with him; I also had one of our volunteers translate the times he is supposed to come, so I hope with the success he’s had, and the translation, that his attendance will be more consistent, and that he continues to be motivated to learn.

Last week, I mentioned a third grade student whose family has been going through a very rough time with the father having a stroke in November and other health issues in the family. I mentioned this student because her family was not able to pay for her attendance at LIST this month; thanks to donors, this student will be paid for not only this month, but for most of next month as well. Again, for those of you who donated, I am TRULY grateful.
