Back to work

It was nice to get back in the swing of things after over a two week break. It was very nice to relax and see family, but getting back in the swing of thins was great!

Recently (in November) one of the father’s of a third grade student attending LIST had a stroke; he is very young, 35, to have a stroke, and it has been a strain on the family. The strain has been so great, the mother, due to stress is now having health complications as well. Since this family pays for tutoring on a monthly basis, her tutoring had been paid in advance through December. Now, however, since the father is not able to work, they cannot afford to pay for tutoring this month. In light of this, I am looking for a sponsor to pay instead, so that this student can continue to attend LIST without a break. One of our volunteers has paid for part of the month (very generous as she is without work at this time). The balance needed is $20; if you are interested, email me at kvellenga@listhelps.org, or write on my wall on Facebook. This donation would be tax deductible, and I will send you a letter/receipt with more information about this student and her progress. Due to the circumstances, this student may also need a sponsor for next month as well. Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers as this is an extremely difficult time.

I was pleased to see one student, a first grade boy who has already been retained once, make progress over the break. Academically, he is extremely low and needs a great amount of help. I had not had the opportunity to work with him until just before the break; it was not until that time that I realized how low, academically he is. I was able to adjust the time he comes, so he is now coming along with the second grade boys that I’ve have blogged about previously. I now have a “mini” class off these three boys. Just before we went on vacation, I gave his mother some suggestions of what she could do to work with him, and I was pleased to see that indeed, over the break, he had made progress. He still has a long was to go, but with help from home, the battle is a bit easier.

I am looking forward to all the work we will be able to do this year; we’ve got a full plate, but I know we will find success.
