This week, I was honored to be invited to the birthday party of one of the students attending LIST. It was a great chance to get to know the rest of his family as well as expand our connection with the community. My husband and I went and we were served Posole (a Mexican soup with pork and hominy). It was excellent and we had a wonderful time. It was a great evening and a cultural experience bringing us out of our normal English speaking environment into one where Spanish is normally spoken; it reminded us both of our need to learn Spanish!
In other news, as of this week, we have now completed over 400 tutoring sessions! Again, with the help of our volunteers our capacity has grown. With these volunteers, there are some students that I have not personally tutored yet, however, this week I was able to work with each new student and gain a better idea of their needs and their unique personalities. I am always amazed, whether working with new students or those students that have been attending for a while, at how much potential each child holds. It is this potential, and seeing the students grow into their potential, that makes this job so rewarding.
Finally, this will be my last post for a week or two as next week we are all on spring break. I think all of us, the parents, students, and myself, are looking forward to a little break in our year. We all need the rest in order to prepare for the upcoming standardized testing that occurs the beginning of May. My goal for this time will be to keep the students from stressing out too much, but yet keep them on their toes and prepared for the tests they will be taking.
