That Time of Year

This was a week of sickness for us at LIST, myself included. There were several students that did not attend due to illness. We are also less than two weeks away from spring break which seems really late this year, so I think we are all wearing down a bit and need a rest.
The students are also aware of the political battle occurring with the teachers and the district and it has been interesting to get their take on what has been occurring. Many teachers (I would have been included in this group if I were still teaching since they went back to the hire date of 1998) have been given pink slips. This means that they may be laid off next year, or if they keep their job, they may not be teaching the same grade or at the same school. This week, many of the teachers who have received pink slips (if not all) called in subs to attend a 2-3 day hearing The students know that many teachers have been laid off, but for some of them, it is difficult to understand why; next year will be interesting because the local school may have many different teachers because of all the changes.
In other news, mark your calendars for May 21 – we are having our second Delicious Desserts fundraiser. Last year’s event was indeed delicious! Whatever you do, come prepared to eat (you may want to work out ahead of time so you don’t feel so guilty!) More details to follow in the coming weeks.
