I am so glad to be celebrating a year of success at LIST! Here are some of the highlights over the past school year.
I first started the year passing out flyers after school for a few days, and then we opened our doors on September 8, 2008 and I had one student registered for that day. It took a two or three weeks before the word really got out and our enrollment increased to a point where we had only 1-2 sessions available each week.
At the beginning of October, we had our first volunteer, and we were able to start taking even more students on those days. By Christmas break, we had completed nearly 200 tutoring sessions in large part due to the help we received by a couple volunteers.
After Christmas break, I spent a few months tutoring back on my own due to the changing work schedules of our volunteers. However, after advertising on different volunteer sites we suddenly had many new volunteers. As I type now, we have three regular volunteers, and a returning volunteer will hopefully join us for our summer session.
We have seen many advances in all the students that have attended LIST, all the students that have come, have loved coming and are always asking their parents if they can come more days. We have seen “B” students raise their grades to “A’s”. We’ve seen a second grade student that came with minimal phonics skills, learn to read. We’ve seen a complete change in attitude of one student, not only in her school work, but her attitude in general improved. We’ve seen parents relieved every day they bring their child; relieved for the help we can give. I’ve had teachers stop me and comment how they’ve seen improvements since their students started attending LIST.
I could go on, but I don’t want to take up too much of your time. It has been a great ride, this first school year of operation and I look forward to our summer programs, as well as what we can accomplish in our second year of operation!
*I will not be blogging until mid-July, but check back then for more updates on our summer program!
