This week at LIST, there was a lot of action. For starters, I was able to see a lot of progress in two students in particular. One student, a second grader, came to me not knowing how to read. He had basic knowledge such as the letters and their sounds, but any extra spellings, or the long vowels, he did not know. Our work, however, over the past 3-4 months is paying off. He now knows 79 of the 85 sounds and spellings! At time, when reading, he does need to be reminded, but there is a definite base to build on that did not exist before!
Another second grade student that has been coming for a few months has shown great strides in her math skills. When she first came, she would an addition or subtraction problem by taping on various places on the table. I found it confusing, yet she would get the correct answer 9 times out of 10. I helped to show her different ways of solving math problems and now she is a whiz. She rarely even uses her fingers; they are currently working on two-digit addition with rounding and it’s like she was been working on it for months instead of a few weeks!
In addition to all of this, we have now completed over 200 tutoring sessions! We could not have done this without all the financial support as well as our volunteers and once again, we are so grateful! With this great news, however, I find that our waiting list is ever expanding. This week alone, I added 5-6 more names to the list. So, not to sound like a broken record, but our need for volunteers is even now greater.
Finally, we will have our first fundraiser of the year on March 6. For more details, go to www.listhelps.org and click on the news tab.
