It was a great first week back at LIST after a long break during the holidays. I was a little worried, after three weeks of being away, how the scheduling would go, and if the students scheduled would remember to come. After Monday, however, I realized there was no need to worry. The students and their parents were ready to come back to LIST with few exceptions. Only those families that had enrolled just before the holidays had trouble remembering their scheduled appointments.
Another great development came in the increase in the number of parents paying for tutoring in one month bundles. The more families that pay by the month, the firmer our schedule becomes and the less stress I have in knowing the availability of sessions for new students. It also demonstrates the good work we are doing and the commitment these families have in bringing their children to LIST.
Over the break, I was able to register LIST with www.volunteermatch.com and I have received a lot of inquiries. So far, we have not had a volunteer commit at this time, but I am hopeful that this will be a good source for new volunteers. As it stands now, I had to put a new potential student on our waiting list again this week. I am hoping to somehow rearrange the schedule to allow this new student to attend, but it may not be possible until we have additional volunteers. Our volunteer that comes on Tuesdays is changing the amount of days she can come due to her work schedule (coming every other Tuesday instead of every Tuesday) so our need for volunteers is increasing. I am also looking into other sites like volunteermatch.com for further help in finding volunteers and will be calling the nearby senior center as well, so hopefully these will be good sources for the tutors we need.
One last bit of news, we have a fund raiser coming at the beginning of March; a night of Improv by L.A. Connections Theater. Almost all the proceeds from this evening will be donated to us; there will also be raffles and lots of laughs. The tentative date is scheduled for March 6. I will post more information on our website, www.listhelp.org, such as the time, confirmed date and price for tickets. My husband and I attended an event done by L.A. Connections Theatre for Breast Cancer Awareness, and we had a great time. If you are in the area, mark it on your calendar and stop in for an evening of fun!
