Over 100 Tutoring Sessions!

This week was a very exciting week at LIST because we have completed over 100 tutoring sessions since our opening! This would not be possible without our volunteers and we are VERY thankful for all their help! Not to mention all of you who are supporting us financially and in other ways! We were also able to serve a record 14 students over 23 sessions this week alone!

Another great success involved a young man I have written about before; a second grade boy that I am teaching to read. As I mentioned a couple weeks ago, we are continuing to work with the sound/spelling cards (cards with the spellings of each sound and a picture on the reverse side to help the students remember the sounds). This work is progressing and the young man is gradually learning more and more spellings. I am also working with him in memorizing “high frequency” words, words that may not “follow the rules” and are often used in speech and in writing. He is making progress in this area as well, however, the real breakthrough came when he was able to attack and read four letter words for the first time since he has been coming to LIST. This is an incredible breakthrough, and a huge stepping stone in his continual quest to learn to read.

As mentioned, we were able to serve a record number of students this week, with a record number of sessions and this truly would not be possible without our volunteers. That being said, I am going to sound like a broken record, but we need more volunteers! Our scheduling is so tight right now. With a low turnover rate in the students coming, we will need to start a waiting list very soon. If you are interested in volunteering, please email me, Kim Vellenga at kvellenga@listhelps.org. If you know anyone that might be interested, please pass on my info to them.

Next week, because there is no school on Monday and Tuesday, LIST will be closed as well, so we will only be open for tutoring Wednesday and Thursday. The school will be closed due to parent/teacher conferences and for Veteran’s Day. It will be interesting to see if we have a jump in the number of parent inquiries after the conferences. Already this week, as some teacher start their conferences early, I am noticing an increased number of interested parents – another reason we need more volunteers! :)

Finally, last week, I mentioned the possibility of a student being sponsored – well we got that sponsor and I just want to say thank you.
