This week was a short week at LIST as Monday was a furlough day for the district; we follow the district schedule as far as when we are open and closed. It gave everyone a nice break, but it means I only worked with some of the students once this week instead of twice.
We did get some sad news this week. The second grade student I have been blogging about will no longer be attending LIST. It is sad since, at this time, LIST is the only place where she is receiving help. She may be enrolled in a “pull-out” program at the school, but I am not sure if this is the case. I blogged many times about how working with her could be frustrating, but I am sad the mother decided to take her out of LIST. Sometimes the parents expect us to help their students catch up in a matter of a few weeks or months, and when that does not happen, they think it is a waste of money to bring them to LIST> The unfortunate part is that what this student really needs is for someone in her household to work with her at home as well as the help we are able to give. I only hope she will be able to find the help she needs because at this point, being successful in school will be very difficult for her.
There are two things the students are looking forward to - Halloween, which falls on a Monday, so we’ll see how many students end up attending. Some of them may be able to convince their parents to skip LIST and get ready to go Trick-or-Treating. The other event the students are looking forward to is our art class which will be on October 22. I am excited to see what the students will be working on this month!
