A Lot of Business

There were many tasks that came to fruition this week at LIST. One task that was completed this week, was our registration with Disney’s “Give a Day, Get a Day” program where you can volunteer at LIST and get a free day at Disneyland! To sign up, go to www.giveadaygetadisneyday.com and click on “Search and sign up”. Then use the zip code 90302 and the “Opportunity Area” as either “Children and Youth” or “Education and Technology”. Click on “More Details” and you will be able to contact us to start the process.

Other exiting developments include the finalizing of our Yelp page. To find us on Yelp, go to http://www.yelp.com/biz/learning-inglewood-style-list-inglewood. If you like the work we do, feel free to rate us! Another opportunity that came about this week is the chance to sign up with Kinecta Federal Credit Union. Once we are signed up as a nonprofit, we can participate in their ‘Give Back” program. If you have your bank accounts through Kinecta, you will be able to link your account to LIST and Kinecta will donate money to us. If you are a member of a different credit union, let me know and I will research to see if they have similar programs. In similar news, one of our readers has signed us up with Amgen’s employee matching program. The registration process takes a few weeks, so we are not registered yet, but when the process is complete, as an Amgen employee, you can donate to LIST and Amgen will match your donation!

Finally, we announced via eblast, our 2010 Fundraising Program. We will be having a few “Community Fundraisers” which will include our first pancake breakfast coming February 27, 9 a.m.-11 a.m. It will be held at LIST, so if you haven’t seen our location, this is a great chance to check it out! The cost will be $3-$4 suggested donation and all the proceeds will benefit LIST. The other facet of our 2010 Fund Drive will be to have several smaller events instead of one big event. These events will include a wine tasting party, and various dinner parties to name a few. At each event, we will share the vision of LIST, the successes we have accomplished and we will also share ways you can be involved. Stay tuned for more information.

Since the blog has been mostly about the “business” of LIST, let me share one story about our success this week. A third grade student I have mentioned in the past, whose family has been through a lot of physical challenges (with her dad having a stroke, and her mom having health issues as well, and recently the student as well) has been making great progress. Due to her diagnosis which includes physical difficulties as well as learning difficulties, this student is much more dependent on an adult for assistance in doing her homework then most third graders. She also has a tendency to rush through things, being rather impatient to get the work done. Recently, specifically when she is reading out loud, I have noticed that she is slowing her pace down; trying to understand what she is reading. This is terrific because it will also help with her comprehension in addition to her fluency. She is s sweet girl and we love having her come to LIST!

One more note of buiness, you can find us on Facebook as well, just type "Learning Inglewood Style" into the search box and you'll see us! Become a fan, if you aren't already.
