I was so excited after I spoke to a mom of one of he students that came to LIST last year. She called to schedule her daughter for the school year, and the mom told me how her daughter had improved her state standardized test scores in both math and language arts. In math, the area we worked on the most, she jumped nearly two levels! In language arts, she improved her score by a one level! The mom was SO happy and attributed this growth to the work we were able to do here at LIST! I am thrilled to be making such a difference!
Next week, we will be closed; this is the first week of school and many teachers do not start assigning homework just yet. I am also going to use this time as an opportunity to advertise with the teachers and parents as well. At this point, however, I only have six open spots, and I am already double booking for our volunteers. This year, I will not spend the first couple weeks with only a few students as was the case last year when we opened. We will be busy from our first opening. It will be fun to catch up with students that attended LIST during the school year, but for whatever reason they could not attend during the summer.
Finally, if you have a Ralph’s Club Card that you have registered for LIST in their give back program, you will need to re-register that card. Ralph’s is requiring that all Club Card members re-register, no matter what when you signed up (i.e. if you signed up last week, you will need to re-register). This needs to be done on or after September 1, 2009 and can be done at the register or by going to www.ralphs.com. If you would like more instructions, go to www.listhelps.org and click on Support LIST by shopping.
In two weeks, when I plan to next blog, I will have more news about the beginning of our second year tutoring the students of Inglewood!
