Fantastic Kids

I was really struck this week by how fantastic the students are that come to LIST and I thought I’d share about a few of them with you.

One student, a fourth grade boy, has been coming almost since we opened. He is a very shy boy and if there are people around, he only answers questions with a barely audible “yes” or “no” or only says as little as possible. This week, however, I had a chance to work with him while there were no other students, volunteers or parents around. He nearly talked my ear off! He was asking all kinds of questions and making all kinds of comments about all kinds of stuff. It was great to hear his opinions and questions; I only hope he will be more open when others are around because he has got a lot of great things to share.

Another student that is just great is a first grade boy. One day he came, and his mother mentioned he had been struggling with subtraction. When I asked him what happened, he said his brain broke that day! He comes with such energy and has such a joy for learning; it is fun to be around him.

Finally, we had our first high school student attend LIST this week. She came needing helping with geometry and I assured her mother I could help. I mean, I got A’s and B’s in geometry and I knew what I was doing . . back then. The poor girl came on Monday and I was absolutely no help! I could not pull those equations out of my head no matter how much I looked at the examples! I felt terrible, and realized how old I am, but luckily one of our volunteers was able to come on Wednesday and help her out. Anyway, this student is just a delightful young woman. She is focused on her goal of becoming a vet and is working her way to that point keeping in mind all she needs to get there. Also, it is very apparent how kind-hearted she is by the way she treats others around her. It is truly awesome to have her attending LIST.

On another note, I’d like to thank a couple people for their help with LIST. This week, my Granma was able to come and help volunteer on Monday and I just want to thank her for coming in and seeing the work we do. Also, one of our volunteers will be coming in for the last time, possibly, for a while as his work schedule has changed. Thank you, Art, for your help, it has been greatly appreciated!
