This week has been a great week at LIST. Our enrollment is increasing, and there seems to be some buzz in the community about us.
I subbed this week at the school nearby, the school I used to teach at, and I was speaking to one of the teachers. She had asked me how things were going at LIST and I mentioned that the enrollment is slowly growing. She asked if she could make copies of the flyers I had placed in each teacher’s box; her plan is to give them out to the parents at Back to School Night next week. Of course, I agreed! What a brilliant idea! I made more copies and attached a note letting the teachers know that they can pass them out at Back to School Night, or any time they want. I also included a more in depth explanation of our services. This way, at the first parent meeting, the parents will hear about us for at leas the second time! What a brilliant idea!
We also had students come for tutoring this week from a different school, and district! The word really is spreading! I think this parent found out about us through a daycare provider. On Tuesday, the daycare provider picked up a student I had tutored, she took some flyers to pass out to her parents. Her daycare is located in the Crenshaw District which is about 5-10 minutes from us by driving. Anyway, the next day a student showed up from a different school and district!
Next week, I have more students scheduled from a different school – same district but I think it is either a private school or a charter school. This family found out about us as they live across the street from LIST.
I also had a high school student stop in to see if she could do her community service, required by her school, by volunteering with us! It would be great have members of the community be part of our volunteer staff, not to mention, it would be a great experience for them as well.
Finally, another exciting event was how LIST was provided for. As I have been tutoring, I have noticed that there are things that we do not yet have such as dictionaries, thesauruses, multiplication and division flashcards and so on. One item I realized we needed was math manipulatives. I mentioned this to one of my co-workers and it turns out because the school has adopted a new math program, she had a bunch of manipulatives to get rid of – the principal had told the teachers to send them home or to throw them out. Receiving these was great as manipulatives can be expensive.
Overall, it has been very exciting to see LIST grow this past week. I definitely was not expecting to have children from other districts come, but it is exciting to know that we may be able to reach an even larger population then we had anticipated.
